Be Courageous!
In 2021, I was contacted and asked if Nic Willis Consulting could develop a 3-month self-paced online HR Toolkit course with some one-to-one mentoring and group Zoom chats. I am not telling you this as a blatant advertising exercise (although I will admit a little blatant advertising is not a bad thing). I am telling you this as it was a prime example of going outside of your comfort zone.
Did I say yes? Of course, I did! That’s what we do in small business! After I stopped rocking in a foetal position, I thought to myself “So, how do I deliver this”. I had never developed a course before with this criteria, or written a workbook or in fact, facilitated online group chats.
I can happily say that I developed and facilitated this course, and I had a blast. I had great participants in the course who represent small businesses in the Isaac and Mackay region and they were a pleasure to work with. Winning!! Who knew I rocked at developing courses? Not me until I gave it my best shot and here are some of the lessons I learnt along the journey so far:
1. Rocking in a foetal position is good for the soul! Go outside of your comfort zone and surprise yourself with what you can achieve.
2. People are patient. If you are open and honest, people will support you. Prior to every Zoom meeting, I apologised in advance for my Heeler puppy barking incessantly or my cat walking across my screen (the joys of working from home). No-one has ever objected when these incidents occur.
3. Hiccups don’t matter in the big scheme of things. I had IT Issues in the first two Zoom meetings but the next one was perfect. I didn’t give up after the first debacle or in fact the second. Perseverance is a great attribute. Just keep going. You’ve got this.
So, find the courage to go outside your comfort zone and bask in your accomplishments. Most of all, make sure you make time to enjoy it. Go forth and conquer those challenges, revel in your success, and learn from your failures. It is so worth it.
