Diversity in the Workplace
Diversity in the workplace promotes different ways of thinking and doing things. This is amazing because one size does not fit all. We need diversity in the workplace to be innovative. So how do you as a leader achieve diversity in the workplace to increase innovation and workable solutions? Please read on…
The definition of diversity is diverse in its own description (there’s something for you to ponder later). When we apply the meaning of diversity to the workplace, it’s not complicated. Diversity in the workplace simply means employing different types of people to benefit from the diversity of thought, skill-set and ideas they contribute. Diversity in the workplace can refer to employing people of different age, gender, qualifications, ethnicity and the list goes on.
The point is - if you continue to employ the same type of person with the same type of skill set, you will continue to get the same outcome. Sure, that’s not always a bad thing, it’s not very progressive or innovative either!
A generation that grew up with technology vs a generation that did not are going to bring different benefits, so mix up the age of people you employ. There’s scientific evidence that demonstrates females think & problem solve differently to males. Mix up the gender diversity and you are guaranteed to have more innovative ideas to benefit your business. Employing people with a mix of qualifications maximises the different solutions that can be put forward. Then you can choose the best one instead of opting for the same old process ‘because it worked last time’.
Embracing diversity involves change which can be difficult at times; however it results in innovation and growth. As a leader or business owner, build a diverse team and ask for their opinions so everyone in the workplace can benefit from diversity of thought and innovation.
