Let's Talk Workplace Culture
There are so many definitions of culture and many opinions on what makes up a strong workplace culture. I like to keep it simple! My definition – “It’s what we do around here when no one is watching”. I believe that a strong culture is based on trust, authenticity, and genuine care and apparently I am not the only one.
The 2022 Global Talent Trends report found that employees are three times more likely to be happy at work if they felt cared about, and four times more likely to recommend working for the company. This is really important information to consider when we do business in a skill short region. It has always been important in business to get the right people in your team but in a skill short region, it is vital to focus on retaining those employees. This means getting to know your employees and ascertaining what motivates and engages them and reinforcing robust recruitment with a thorough induction and onboarding processes.
However, it is not enough just to have a strong culture. You need to be seen to have one. Make sure your job adverts clearly show your values and the benefits of working for your company and in your team. Be genuine and realistic and set clear expectations. Ensure you practise values driven recruitment and above all, don’t promise what you can’t deliver.
Research indicates that the 2020s is the era where human-focused company culture reigns as people re-evaluate what is important in their work life. They want to be engaged and appreciated for their efforts. They want to trust their leaders and know what they think matters. When you achieve this, you will have a strong base to build an amazing workplace culture.
